Republic of Korea and Canada agreed to launch the ROK-Canada Climate Change
Dialogue
1.
On September 5, 2022, Hyoeun Jenny Kim, Ambassador & Deputy Minister for
Climate Change had a meeting with Catherine Stewart, Canada’s Ambassador for
Climate Change at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Korea
where the Ambassadors agreed to launch the ROK-Canada Climate Change Dialogue.
2.
Acknowledging the catastrophic and intensifying threats posed by climate
change, the two Ambassadors shared their understanding of the need to urgently
scale up climate action in this critical decade. Both countries have a role to
play by implementing their Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris
Agreement to keep the 1.5 ℃ goal within reach.
3.
To effectively implement the commitments of the two countries under the Paris
Agreement, including the respective 2030 greenhouse gas reduction targets and
2050 carbon neutrality goals, the Ambassadors agreed to enhance bilateral
cooperation on climate change through the launching of the ROK-Canada Climate
Dialogue on an annual basis. The 1st ROK-Canada Climate Change
Dialogue will be held in 2023.
4.
During the bilateral Dialogue, the Ambassadors expect not only to discuss
bilateral cooperation plans with regard to the international climate change
commitments, policies and partnerships, but also exchange ideas and best
practices regarding domestic climate action, including carbon pricing
mechanisms, renewables, zero-emissions vehicles, and the
deployment of clean technology.
5.
As the climate diplomacy leaders of the two countries, the Ambassadors will
continue to drive momentum and global climate ambition as countries meet for
COP27 in Egypt this November.
